Becoming a Superwhisper Whisperer 🗣️

Do your fingers ache from all your vicious keyboard typing, or are your hands slower than your brain? If so, you're in good company.
I often struggle to put my thoughts on paper. Not necessarily because they're ill-defined, but because typing is an additional process that makes it more challenging to keep my thoughts coherent.
Sometimes, I can explain a concept at length to someone, but it doesn't flow as easily when I want to write it down.
Spelling and grammar slow me down even further.
That's why I wanted to try Superwhisperer.
What is Superwhisper? 🤔
Superwhisper is a convenient application for recording and transcribing your voice. It's currently only available for Apple devices.
You start and stop the recording using a simple keyboard shortcut. When the transcription returns, Superwhisper pastes the output into the active input field, if one exists. Otherwise, it appears in the pop-up.
To make your transcript more useful, you can select a mode that structures what you said based on your use case. The idea is to send the transcript to OpenAI (or similar) for refinement.

Custom modes 🔥
You can also create custom modes for more control. This adds the "Change Prompt" option, where you can tell the AI what to do with your transcript and if it should have access to the context of the current application and the content of your clipboard.

You can also add examples of inputs and expected outputs to provide even more details. I haven't tried this feature much yet, but it should be helpful in many situations.
Superwhisper is still more of a project than a product, and many features don't work as expected.
Superwhisper pricing💰
You can use Superwhisper Pro for free for 15 minutes of audio. If you want to continue using the Pro features, it costs $8.49 per month or $84.99 per year.

How I use Superwhisper ℹ️
Since I enjoy writing and sharing ideas online, my first use case was straightforward transcription. I often have ideas and thoughts I can passionately discuss for hours. They are crystal clear in my mind, and I can't wait to put them down on digital paper.
However, as soon as I start typing on the keyboard, it feels like my train of thought travels over a plaza covered in well-chewed chewing gum. The writing process creates friction, and the idea doesn't flow as easily anymore.
So, instead of writing the words from scratch, I start by transcribing my thoughts with Superwhisper using the voice mode.
I don't care about grammar or anything of that nature. I just want to ensure that everything relevant exists on the page.
Then what? 🤨
The transcribed text is far from publishable.
I've tried creating custom modes in Superwhisper to perform some post-processing, but so far, it hasn't worked as expected.
The "Use copied text" feature doesn't work well at the moment, so running commands on existing text with Superwhisper is challenging.
You can create a custom mode with a prompt describing how you want the AI to format the text. That will work for some people, but I'm rarely satisfied with AI-generated text.
I actually want to write each word by hand. That way, I get text with my personality instead of something generic. I just want an AI solution that makes that process smoother.
That's also why I don't paste the transcription into ChatGPT. No matter how many examples or instructions I give, the generated text feels wrong.
What works for me ⚙️
After I've transcribed my thoughts, I do the unimaginable. I edit the text manually, removing redundant information and turning it into something I want to read.
It's not cool from an AI perspective, but sometimes you get most of the value without flashy technology.
I will use more of Superwhisper's features as the product matures.
The optimal editor 💡
Using Superwhisper with the Ghost sparked my ideation brain, and I started building a text editor designed for me.
I implemented my own Superwhisper and created workflows specific to me. It's not ready for launch yet (if ever), but stay tuned.

I enjoy building AI applications and can publish them if you're interested. For the moment, it's mostly for fun. I will share tips and tricks on building your applications in this newsletter.
Verdict 🤓
I've used Superwhisper for a few weeks now and have actually signed up for a pro subscription. I'm not sure it adds enough value to me yet, but I'm excited to see where this product is headed.
Here's my verdict so far.
It takes some time getting used to ⌚
It still feels a bit awkward speaking to the computer, but I tend to get rolling after a few sentences. Hopefully, the awkwardness disappear as I continue using the product.
However, I don't imagine Superwhisper and I will hangout at our local coffeeshop for some time. Constant glares from angry people is certainly going to destroy my focus.
With that in mind, if solutions like Superwhisper become the norm, the noice cancelling business will boom.
It's already great for writers like me ✍️
Having an interface that transcribes my speech and ads it to my text editor creates more value than I would have guessed.
It's clear that I write my articles quicker if I start by turning my ideas into words right away, even though the text itself is horrible.
Taking a large blob of text and turning it into something nice saves me a ton of time compared to trying to write good text straight away. I struggle to write without editing at the same time, so transcribing my voice works better for me.
Also, when I don't think about grammar and spelling, my thoughts flow more freely and I can work on the idea instead of the text.
Some other benefits ☕
Another benefit is that I can work comfortable from my couch instead of sitting hunched over my laptop with bad posture.
Poor a cup of coffee, put your laptop on the table, and lean back. Talk until your out of ideas and work with the resulting text in a way that suits you.
What could be better? 🔧
Superwhisper works well as a transcription tool that integrates with other applications through input fields, but more advanced features related to post-processing doesn't hit the spot.
If you're less of a perfectionist than I am, the generated text is probably good enough, but I'm rarely satisfied. With better AI, I expect that to change.
It's interesting to see if Superwhisper manage to create a transcription tool that performs additional tasks in a good way. Turning your text into a good sales email is one thing, but integrating with complex applications is another.
Excited for new versions!
